Chocolate Squares with Maria Biscuits

These Chocolate Squares with Maria Biscuits are one of those recipes that looks like you spent hours in the kitchen but takes almost no time at all. No oven required — just four simple ingredients melted together, mixed with crushed Maria Biscuits, and left to set. My family asks for these constantly, and I’m always happy to make them because they disappear just as fast.

A dessert with chocolate topping sits on a decorative blue and white floral-patterned plate reminiscent of traditional Azores design. A metal spoon rests on the plate beside the dessert, hinting at a delightful Portuguese cooking recipe. The plate is positioned on a beige countertop.

What are Chocolate Squares with Maria Biscuits?

Chocolate Squares with Maria Biscuits are a classic Portuguese no-bake dessert made from sweetened condensed milk, semisweet chocolate, butter, and crushed Maria Biscuits — those thin, lightly sweet wheat cookies you’ll find in the international aisle of most grocery stores. Once the chocolate mixture sets in the refrigerator, it slices into rich, fudgy squares that are deeply chocolatey with just enough texture from the biscuit pieces. They’re the kind of treat that shows up at Portuguese family gatherings, holiday tables, and — if you’re lucky — just sitting on the counter on a random Tuesday.

How to Make This Recipe

The technique is straightforward. You melt the condensed milk, butter, and chocolate together in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring constantly until completely smooth. Take it off the heat, fold in the crushed Maria Biscuits, then pour everything into a greased baking dish. The key is patience after that — a minimum of three hours in the refrigerator to set, but overnight is better. The longer it chills, the cleaner your cuts will be when you slice it into squares.

Tips for the Best Chocolate Squares

  • Use good quality semisweet chocolate. The chocolate is the main flavor here — it’s worth using something you’d eat on its own. Ghirardelli works well.
  • Keep the heat low when melting. Condensed milk scorches easily. Stir constantly and don’t rush it.
  • Crush the Maria Biscuits coarsely, not to dust. You want pieces with some texture — it makes a difference in the final bite.
  • Grease your baking dish well before pouring in the mixture. It makes removal and cutting much cleaner.
  • Chill overnight if you can. Three hours is the minimum, but the texture improves significantly with a full overnight rest.
  • A pinch of flaky sea salt on top before chilling takes these from good to excellent.
  • Store covered in the refrigerator. They’ll keep for up to a week — though they rarely last that long.

For this recipe you’ll need a good saucepan that heats evenly over low heat. This 2-quart saucepan from Amazon is a solid option — the right size for melting chocolate without scorching.
